Doug Grant Reserve and Beach
Altona, Victoria
Port Phillip Bay
|
|
On the map, this reserve is marked as offleash but no mention
of the beach. There seemed to be lots of dog owners also exploring the
beach right next to it offleash. We went exploring here the other day
during low tide, and it was different from PA Burns reserve/beach only
a few KM away. The sand banks were higher and the entire beach area was
much more varied.

Laverton Creek exits to the bay here, so walking through the
creek the water was lovely and warm. There was also plenty of scrubland
along the sand dunes for the dogs to go sniffing around at.

Kite Surfers seemed to enjoy this place also as there seemed
to experienced and new people partaking in the sport. My dogs and nor
anyone else's seemed to mind them zipping about the length of the
beach. If you're a little worried there's heaps of room to move around
and avoid them.

If you're into bird photography you'll likely have some fun
here as there were large flocks of sea bird all over the place, mainly
hanging around the wetlands near the exit of the creek.
Be aware though, if you go decide to try and cut across the
wetlands to get to the bridge over laverton creek, you'll find lots of
muddy bogs to walk through. There wasn't many paths either to cut
across, so I don't recommend it. We got ourselves a little lost and
muddy when trying to get back to the reserve.

There's 2 parking spots up the north-east end of the reserve that didn't seem to crowded as people were constantly leaving and
going. Parking off Queen st, or at the very end of The Esplanade. There is a toilet block also near the carpark area which was handy.
One of the first things we noticed as we started exploring, was a VERY strong 'eggy fart' smell around the parking lot and creek
mouth section of the beach. We had a southish wind that evening, so I wasnst overly sure what was causing it. But the smell was strong enough
for some of us to cover our noses a bit.
